The Palais des Beaux Arts (Palace of Fine Arts) and the Palais des Arts Libéraux (Palace of Liberal Arts) were designed by the architect Jean Camille Formigé and constructed for the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Originally standing on opposite sides of the Eiffel Tower, they were both demolished in 1897 to make room for new construction in the run-up to the 1900 exposition on the same site
Collection, as issued, comprises 35 Albumen prints mounted to 30 unbound boards showing various stages of construction preceding the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World's Fair) in Paris. The collection primarily depicts the construction of the Palais de Beaux Arts and the Palais de Arts Libéraux and shows the various unfinished states of the structures themselves, the fairgrounds, and the workers involved in the construction. Each photograph is captioned, giving the location, subject, and date of capture
Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) copy housed in original four-flap wrapper as issued. The boards of the wrapper are halfbound in goatskin and pebbled cloth, with the title stamped in gilt on the upper cover
